The Do Lectures 2011

I was extremely lucky to attend the 'Do Lectures' last week courtesy of my good friend, and one of the key organisers, Anna Felton. Held at the truly stunning fforest in South Wales, the event plays host to inspirational speakers from across the globe.

I met some great people (Frank Chimero, Perry Chen and Zach Smith to name but a few), ate some amazing food, drank some of the finest Welsh Beer, Heard some truly inspirational stories and even swam in the beautiful (but freezing) Teifi River. I would recommend it to anyone so if you get the chance then jump at it! (pictures taken from Flickr as my pictures were on my phone and my phone broke.)

A-Z Advert

Over the last few months I've been working closely with Sara Dunlop and the guys at Rattling Stick to produce this advert for a certain, well-known fast food chain...

I worked on the initial story-boarding, concepts and set design and then was involved in photoshoots and even did some of the animation in the ad. It was very involved and a really fun experience. I'll put up some of the drawings on my website soon.

The ETHICAL ISSUE of working for a company such as Mcdonald's did cross my mind when I agreed to take on the job. I'm sure some of you, for whatever reason, may feel like I'm 'selling out' and would have turned down the job if offered. Personally I don't have a problem with the company (although I don't actually like the taste of Mcdonald's...well, I might be tempted with the odd chicken nugget...) Today, A company of it's size (and possibly its reputation) is so strictly regulated that it has no choice but to follow rigid ethical guidelines and meet standards that smaller companies may be able get around or ignore. Of course there is no debate that Mcdonald's is the epitome of capitalism which may sit uncomfortably with some people but as a commercial illustrator or artist where do you draw the line, or have we all already crossed it?

I was commissioned to do another cover for Sport magazine the other week. The screen-printed design focused on the Heineken Cup final and asked if it was the 'Rise of the Red Rose?' Well, it turned out it wasn't, oh well...

I recently spent a few weeks working at Rosco Production. I really enjoyed it and got to work with some great clients. I came across this Guinness ad on Hackney Road that I was the Producer on – it's always nice to see something that you've worked on, especially when it's 10 feet tall!

I was asked to produce an illustration around the theme 'primitive nude' for an upcoming exhibition in Bangkok. It's called 'The Pens Of Famous Authors'-from left to right the stripping pens are Ralph Fellison, Oscar Wilde, Unknown (The Bible), Ken Kessy and Stephen King. The Illustration will appear in the exhibition as well as on bags and posters.

Alphabet Posters with the kids!

Over the last few months me and my good friend Victoria Walmsley have been working with a London secondary school and getting them to experiment with typography. One of the tasks we set was to create found alphabets out of hidden letters around the school. The 3 alphabets look fantastic and completely unique. 2010 will no doubt bring many new challenges, the first of which comes this Monday when I will begin a 3 month project with GCSE students from All Saints School, East London. It is part of a government initiative called 'Creative Partnerships' which sees Professionals from the creative industry enter schools and embark on projects related to their specialism. The Project is called 'Building A Message' and I will be working with superstar graphic designer Victoria Walmsley, focusing on typographic experimentation.

Just come back from the 'Power in numbers' private view at the Bodhi Gallery on Brick lane. Big thanks to Em and co. for coming down especially! The show was great with some fantastic work. some of my favourites included prints from Jez Burrows, Owen P and Peter Stitson. My print was also featured on the CR Blog (see link below). This is a new Flyer for the lovely Dilly at Long Leave (rough sketch below). Always a pleasure doing stuff for Dilly as she lets me do whatever I like, unfortunately I had flu (proper flu) so wasn't quite as much fun as normal but I battled through. Looks like it should be an excellent gig too!
